Youth is the time to imagine and dream. Youth is the time to make mistakes. Youth is the time to succeed and be told everything is good. Youth is the time to lay the foundation. Youth is not the time to build the roof. Create an environment, talent will come." {Tom Turner, OYSAN 'E' coach manual} Recognizing the four principles that motivate children to play (action, personal involvement, excitement, friendship), and applying principles of child learning behavior, the national and state soccer coaching directors have been aggressively promoting small sided games for the past decade as the method of teaching soccer to children. This process uses age appropriate soccer training games rather than drills at practices, and modified rules, reduced field size, and small team size on competition days. Adult concepts of training and winning are replaced with a focus on fun, equal participation, and the freedom to experiment. At ages 5,6 games are 3 vs. 3, no goalkeeper; 4 vs. 4 at ages 7,8, no goalkeeper; 8 vs. 8 at ages 9 ,10; 9 vs 9 at ages 11,12; with rule and field size modifications for each age bracket. The foundation of this program is a core of trained volunteer coaches who love soccer, and can teach age appropriate skills utilizing small sided game philosophy. While each division will have the autonomy to recruit their own coaches and players and to set their own practice schedules, the club will: train all coaches utilizing experienced local coaches and Pa West's coach development programs; provide practice equipment; and help maintain practice sites, and coordinate weekly Saturday competitions. By Pa West policy, all of our club's coaches must have criminal and child abuse clearances on file with the club. Each community division will conduct two practices per week within their community, scheduled by their age group coach. The players from all three divisions will participate together in a community "Saturday Soccerfest" each Saturday at the club's facilities at Mahaney Park There will not be fixed teams at the 5/6 and 7/8 age groups. At these age groups, different teams will be organized each week based on the attendance each week. The 9/10 and 11/12 groups will have structured teams organized at the beginning of each session, with a strong emphasis on balancing the skill levels among the teams. eligibility:Any child age 5 - 12 may join this recreational program, registering in the division they reside in (Hermitage, Sharon, Sharpsville). Children from surrounding communities may register with the division closest to their residence. Additional divisions (i.e. Farrell) could be added in the future when sufficient numbers of players and coaches are available. Go to your community's web page via the link at the top of this page for details specific to your community. player fees:Shenango Valley Soccer fees per session: *$37 first child, *$32 second child, *$27 third and subsequent child per household; payable to SAYSA, by check or money order only. Registration forms are at Hermitage Agway, can be downloaded from this website, and we will attempt to have them available from respective schools, depending on school policy. policy approved at 6/2/03 meeting:To enable continued quality training of our club members the club may need to limit the number of participants in a given age group, based on the number of available coach/trainers and available game fields and supplies. Applications will be tracked based on the date received by the registrar. IF the club needs to limit the number of players in an age group, participation will be offered on a first come first served basis. equipment:The club will provide a jersey for each player. The player is to provide their own shinguards, trunks, socks and practice ball. Suggested ball sizes: 5 to 8 years old: size 3; 9 to 12 years old: size 4; 13 and up: size 5.
